Constantine Christmas Tree Planting

MS4S supported Beach Guardian at Constantine Bay on Sunday 14th January, when around 150 volunteers dragged, dug and part-buried 250 ‘retired’ Christmas trees.

The trees have been placed in a particular area that is prone to erosion, where they will act as a windbreak, causing sand to build up around them while they decay. As the sand builds up, it creates space for plants like marram grass to grow. Plant roots help to bind the sand together, meaning the new dunes will hopefully keep getting bigger as more wind-blown sand gets deposited, creating a brilliant sea defence and wildlife habitat!

Beach Guardian have been supported in this work by many different people and organisations, including: Trevisker Garden Centre, haulage firm TH Sandry & Son, Constantine Beach Café, the ‘Farming in Protected Landscapes’ programme, Making Space for Sand project staff and, of course the many volunteers who turned out on a cold winter’s day and got stuck in!  Thank you everyone for turning up!
